Otter Newsletter for Week of July 12, 2009
Congratulations to everyone on a super team effort in Saturday’s win against Willowood. Our victory means we will stay in A division for next year. Thanks to those who went the extra mile to stay in town to participate. Our victory was a true team effort.
Now, on to a very busy week:
Divisionals, for those that signed up with Jim, are this Saturday at Hummelstown. Our warm up begins promptly at 7:25. Plan on arriving by 7:15. You will be able to drop off swimmers at the front gate, but then will have to park elsewhere. (TBD) Hummelstown will provide shuttle service back to the pool.
In order to have our divisional entries accepted, we learned we had to submit volunteer names on Sunday evening. Sooooooo, we drafted some of you for service. Here are our draftees: Timers plus backup (7)— Silcox, Fox, Parrish, Yaw, St. Clair, Mowery, Mosby; Stroke and turn plus alternate (3)— Weik, Schug, Cooper; Starter/Recall (1)—Peters; Finish judge (1)— Pityk; Proofreader (1) – Kaylor; Ribbons (1)- Nguyen. Please email Kathy Wingert immediately at dkwingert@comcast.net if you are unable to serve, and thank you in advance for stepping in to aid our team.
All- Stars are Sunday, July 19 at home. Our warm-ups begin promply at 7:00 a.m. The meet begins at 9:10 a.m. Set –up for this event begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening for all Otter families. For this major event, we can use the help of moms and dads. As my grandma used to say, “Many hands make light work.” Please come and help set-up on Saturday evening. As for Sunday, thanks to those parents who have already signed up to volunteer. We still have some empty slots under concessions. If your name does not appear below, we need you to sign up to fill a slot. Email Debbie Schug at dschugfam@aol.com immediately if you are willing to fill one of these slots. If your name does appear below and you now have problems serving, please find a replacement and then email Debbie with the change. The current volunteer list is:

A big part of our proceeds comes from our concessions sold at this meet, so we need your concession donations. Rather than assignments by last name, we need you to affirmatively sign up to bring a specific item or items. Please sign up on the donation sheet at practice by Wednesday. If you are not going to be at the pool and need suggestions, email Tari Weik at gtweik@comcast.net. Nonperishable items can be dropped off at the pool this week and placed in the new concessions shed.
For our new swimmers, these meets run differently than our regular dual meets. A quick explanation: Swimmers qualify for All-Stars based upon their swims at Divisionals. From all three Divisional meets held on Saturday, the top 16 finishers in individual events and the top 8 finishers in relay events qualify for All-Stars. The All-Star Meet is then a qualifier for Mid-Caps, which is held the next weekend. From the All-Star Meet, the top 6 individual finishers and the top 3 relay finishers make it to Mid-Caps.
Debbie Schug is looking for two canopies for use during this meet. If you have one on your back porch, in your camper, or in your garage that you’d be willing to let us borrow for a few hours on Sunday, email Debbie at dschugfam@aol.com.
Pre-ordered all-star shirts will be available for pick-up this week. All-Star shirts will be available on Friday at practice, including those FREE shirts for our meet-day volunteers.
Mini-golf at Yogi’s is still on for tonight, July 14, at 5 p.m. Golf is on the coaches. Some kids bring money for ice cream afterwards. The cookout at the pool originally set for Thursday, July 16, is postponed due to events in the Gardner family. It will be rescheduled.
Next week:
Our team banquet/ picnic/ pool fun night is set for Wednesday evening, July 22. All-Star qualifiers should arrive at 5:30 for a newspaper picture. Everyone else should arrive at 6. Bring a covered dish (entrée, salad, side) and a dessert, as well as lawn chairs. We eat at 6, have awards, and then play in the pool.
David Gardner is coordinating a slide show presentation for the banquet, but he needs your pictures. Please send digital pictures to David’s email, dmg002@lvc.edu, or even better, burn him a disk and give it to him.
Rachiele Peters is collecting money for coach’s gifts to be presented at the banquet. See her at practice or at the meets this weekend.
If you signed up to participate in the Willowood Invitational and still have not paid for your events, please see Kris Fox immediately. Jim paid for everyone’s events with a personal check when he submitted our entries, and we are trying to reimburse him.
Finally, a note from the Gardner and Wingert families:
Thank you to our Otter family for the love and support lavished on us these last few weeks during the final days and “homegoing” of our beloved Dad and Pop Pop, Conard Gardner. Pop Pop was part of the continuous fabric of this team for the last 45 years, serving as a swim dad, on-deck official, league rep, coach’s dad, and finally as a swim grandpa. Until he got ill three years ago, he still came to every home meet, and, even as late as last year, he made friends with the bake sale ladies and got chocolate doughnuts when our mother (The Nana) wasn’t watching. Your extravagant kindness to us has blessed us beyond description as we grieve our loss but celebrate his wonderful life.
