Otter Newsletter for Week of January 18, 2009

Congratulations Otters on many good swims in last Saturday’s meet against a very strong, currently undefeated Lancaster Y team.  The Otters came in second. J

Please note there are changes to the practice schedule this week and next.  On Friday, January 23, there will be practice for the ADVANCED group only from 3:30-4:30.  All other levels are cancelled that evening.  On Tuesday, January 27, THERE WILL BE NO PRACTICE FOR ANY LEVELS DUE TO MAINTENANCE ON THE COLLEGE POOL.

Our final dual meet of the season is this Saturday, January 24 against the Lower Paxton Aquatic Club.  Swimmers should arrive by 7.  Senior recognition begins at 8:15.  The meet begins at 8:30.  Jim has been finding that he needs to make many last minute changes to the line up because swimmers’ intentions to participate/or not participate have changed since meet sign ups.  PLEASE CHECK THE MEET LINE UP TONIGHT TO MAKE SURE YOUR SWIMMER’S INTENTION TO SWIM OR NOT SWIM IS ACCURATELY REFLECTED.  If you cannot attend practice tonight but know you have a change, email Jim immediately at jgardner@acschools.org.  For meet day emergencies ONLY, contact Jim at 270-7012 or David at 644-1220.

The PATIENT line up ladies need your help.  Each meet they carefully monitor your child’s events and get them to the blocks in time despite chaos and crowds in the back hallway.  The ladies’ job is made much more difficult because they can’t find the kids!  Please, if you want these ladies to line up you kids, have your kids stay in the racquetball court area.  If you want to keep your kids with you, then the ladies request that you line them up 3 to 4 events prior to their individual event, or 5 to 6 events prior to a relay event.  If you intend for your children to line themselves up, please let the ladies know at the beginning of the meet.  Thank you!

Home meets require a large number of volunteers to make things run smoothly for our swimmers.  If your child is swimming, we need you to be helping!  To officiate or finish judge, email Kathy Wingert at dkwingert@comcast.net.  To time, email Kris Fox at kfox@lebanon.k12.pa.us.  To help with set up, tear down, or line up, email Rachiele Peters at rachiele_peters@pasd.us.  To work the bake sale, email Deb O’Connor at deb.oconnor@comcast.net.  As my Nanny (grandma) Gardner used to say, “Many hands make light work.”  (If you do not volunteer, Rachiele Peters will be contacting you with an assignment.  Save her the trouble and control your own destiny—proactively sign up to do something today!)

Thanks to all who have been contributing to our bake sale table.  Here are the assignments for this week’s bake sale:

 A-E

Donuts or Flavored Bagels (blueberry, wheat, etc.)  We have plain and cinn. bagels.

 F-J

Water or Gatorade or Flavored Water (6 or 8 pack) or Candy/baked items

 K-Q

Pre-cut Fruit or Vegetables sliced and placed in individual bags

 R-Z

Soda  (Coke, Root Beer, Orange, Sprite)  We have enough diet soda.

The Otterwear is coming!  The Otterwear is coming!  Karen Peachey will be distributing Otterwear to those that ordered at Saturday’s meet.

Competitive swimmers:  Team photos have been moved from January 26 to Tuesday, February 3.  More information will follow in next week’s newsletter.  Information will also be available on the website.

Divsional/All-Star Weekend is right around the corner, February 14 and 15.  Both meets are being held at Cumberland Valley this year, and both are typically divided into a morning session (for 8’s and 10’s) and an afternoon session (for 12’s, 14’s, and unlimiteds).  Kathy Wingert is collecting names of volunteers from our team who are willing to work at either or both meets.  Email Kathy at dkwingert@comcast.net indicating the meet(s) you are willing to work, which session, and your preferred job: official, timer, Colorado/Meet manager assistant, bull pen (line up).  Volunteers get free admission and a free heat sheet.

We are also looking for someone on our team to organize preorders for divisional and all/star t-shirts sold by the host teams as memorabilia.  The job involves collecting orders in your folder at practice the next two weeks and then tabulating them for our team group order form.  If interested, reply to this email and say “YES!”
