Otter Newsletter for Week of June 7, 2009
Welcome back Otter families! It’s been great to see old friends on deck and some new faces too!
It’s hard to believe the season has begun, and our first meet is this Saturday morning, June 13, at home against Hershey. Home meets require a lot of help and cooperation from everyone. Here’s the scoop:
The meet on Saturday is OUTSIDE at the A/C Pool. Otter swimmers should arrive by 7:10 a.m. for 7:15 warm-ups.
But, before anyone jumps into the water, Jim needs to know who plans on swimming. Meet sign up slips are available at practice. Fill out a slip to let Jim know your intentions for this meet (and all the rest) by this Wednesday, June 10. If you cannot make practice to physically sign up, email Jim at maryjimgardner@verizon.net.
In addition to swimmers, we also need volunteers! (Lots of them.)
1) First, we need many strong men to help move the bulkhead into position and complete other set-up on Friday night. Helpers should arrive (with suits) by 7:30 p.m. For our new families, this is a fun way for the dads “to bond.” They have a great time and often go out for pizza at Napoli’s afterwards.
2) Second, we need volunteers to staff various positions on meet day. There are sign up sheets outside the locker rooms at LVC, which will be moved to a portable bulletin board at A/C once outside practice begins this week. If you cannot sign up on the sheets, please email the following coordinators to let them know you are willing to serve. If you are willing to time, email Kris Fox at fox1445@comcast.net. If you are willing to officiate, email Kathy Wingert at dkwingert@comcast.net. If you are willing to work the bake sale (a great job for a mom with young kids), email Tari Weik at gtweik@comcast.net. In order for us to be able to adequately staff a home meet, we need at least one parent from every family volunteering in some capacity.
3) Third, we need every Otter family to contribute to the bake sale. Donations are assigned by the first letter of the swimmers’ last names. (If you can’t attend the meet, please make a donation so that supplies can be purchased instead. Write your $10 check to LVST, put “bake sale donation” on the memo line, and give it to Tari Weik.) Hershey is a HUGE team, so we need LOTS of food. This week’s assignments are:
A-E
1 dozen Donuts or Bagels and either an 8 pack of Gatorade or a 12 pack of Propel.
F-J
24 or 32 pk 20 oz. water bottles and either candy or individually wrapped baked items.
K-Q
24 pack Coke or Diet Coke and variety packs of chips, pretzels, and Doritos.
R-Z
24 pack “other” soda (Root Beer, Orange, Sprite) and individually wrapped bags of cut up veggies.
*****Note: We desperately need 6 families to ignore the above list and instead donate bulk pasta salad (3 families) and fruit salad (3 families). If you are willing to do so, email Tari Weik at the above email address. ********
Are you willing to help coordinate ads for the All-Star program (a super way to serve your team if you cannot help on All-Star meet day)? Email Deb Schug, who did it last year and lived to tell the tale, at schugfam@aol.com.
A few other reminders:
1) In case of a meet day emergency, phone Jim ASAP at 270-7012.
2) Practice on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week is at LVC, 9-10:30 older, 10:30-11 a.m. younger swimmers. Beginning Thursday morning, we go outside at the A-C Pool with our regular practice times… 7:30-8:30 older, 8:30-9:15 younger. For those 13 and older, we will be having dry-land exercise after the older kids’ session every Monday and Wednesday with our personal (and fabulous) Otter trainer, Kris Keck. Bring sneakers and shorts.
3) If you have not yet joined the A-C Pool, you must do so before the first meet.
That’s it! See everyone at the pool!
